Big Sur Engagement Session: What to Wear
Big Sur is one of my favorite locations for a Big Sur engagement session in California. When couples book with me, they often ask, “What should we wear for our Big Sur engagement session?” I love helping couples choose the perfect outfits, so here are a few tips for your upcoming Big Sur engagement session.
Coordinating Outfits for Your Big Sur Engagement Session
Make sure you and your partner are coordinated for your Big Sur engagement session. There’s nothing worse than looking back at photos and realizing your outfits clash. I usually work with stylish couples, so this rarely becomes an issue. But feel free to message me before your Big Sur engagement session, and I’ll be happy to help! If you need more guidance on what to wear for a Big Sur engagement session, I’m here to assist.
Choosing the Right Colors for Your Big Sur Engagement Session
When choosing colors for your Big Sur engagement session, neutrals are always a good choice. Neutral tones look beautiful against the stunning Big Sur landscape, and they allow you to stand out in your Big Sur engagement photos. If you’re looking to add a pop of color, rich shades like burnt orange work well against the sand and cliffs. Lighter colors, like white and cream, will beautifully complement the natural beauty of Big Sur in your engagement photos.
Big Sur Engagement Session Outfit Inspiration
Here are a few examples from past Big Sur engagement sessions to inspire your outfit choices:
- Tricia & Aj: Tricia wore a gorgeous white dress, and Aj wore a neutral polo shirt with dark pants for their Big Sur engagement session.
- Reba & Jay: Reba wore a chic white dress, and Jay wore a black suit with white sneakers. Their outfits added elegance to their Big Sur engagement session, and they switched to more casual clothes before heading to the beach.

Things to avoid
Now that you know the basics of what to wear, let’s talk about what you should avoid. In general, super crazy patterns are best left at home! You don’t want your outfits to distract from YOU! If you do want to wear a pattern, make sure it’s somewhat subdued and your partner wears a solid color to compliment it. I usually recommend couples avoid the color red because it can pull the pink and red tones out of the skin. Another color to remove from the lineup is blue, as it can blend into the sky or the water depending on the location! Of course, these are all on a case-by-case basis. Pack multiple outfits
As you can see in the different blog posts, every couple packed multiple outfits for their session. This is a great way to mix it up and add variety to your photos! Bringing one dressy outfit and one casual outfit (that you don’t mind getting a little dirty if need be) is usually the sweet spot. And one more thing: don’t forget to pack comfy shoes for walking! I love Big Sur and all the places we can explore, so I don’t want you getting blisters halfway through our session. Knowing what to wear for your Big Sur engagement session includes practical considerations like this. Deal?
