What to Wear For Your Big Sur Engagement Session

Informational

Big Sur is one of my FAVE locations for engagement sessions in California. When couples book with me, one of the first questions I get asked is “What should we wear for our Big Sur engagement session?” I love helping my couples choose outfits, but here are some guidelines for you to keep in mind!

What to wear for your Big Sur engagement session

We’re gonna keep it real simple here! First off, make sure you and your partner are coordinated for your Big Sur engagement session. There’s nothing worse than looking back at your photos and realizing your outfits totally clash! Somehow I always end up with the most stylish couples ever, so this usually isn’t that big of an issue. if you’re ever in doubt, never be afraid to message me beforehand and I’d love to help you pick out outfits.

As a general rule of thumb, neutral tones are ALWAYS a good idea for engagement sessions. Especially for sessions at outdoor locations like Big Sur, neutrals look so beautiful against the different backdrops. If you want to go for a pop of color, try something rich and deep like burnt orange. Darker colors really pop on the beach against the light color of the sand! On the other hand, lighter colors like white and cream just look so perfect against the cliffs of Big Sur. I have done tons of Big Sur engagement sessions, so here are some examples you can check out:

Alondra & Javier: They stuck with the white/neutral outfits; Alondra wore a super cute white dress and Javier wore a white polo shirt and light wash jeans! Later on, Alondra changed into a more casual top when we went down to the beach.

Reba & Jay: They decided to dress up a little more for their session, with Reba in a short but classy white dress, and Jay wearing a casual black suit with white sneakers! Their outfits really added to the elegance of their shoot, and they both changed into more casual outfits before we hit the beach.

Gabby & Bart: These two went with the darker neutral tones and their outfits looked so cute in the photos! They complimented each other so well without being overly matching. Gabby wore a deep, burnt orange dress and Bart wore a tan-colored button-up with black pants. Very simple, but very cute!

Things to avoid

Now that you know the basics of what to wear, let’s talk about what you should avoid. In general, super crazy patterns are best left at home! You don’t want your outfits to distract from YOU! If you do want to wear a pattern, make sure it’s somewhat subdued and your partner wears a solid color to compliment it. I usually recommend couples avoid the color red because it can pull the pink and red tones out of the skin. Another color to remove from the lineup is blue, as it can blend into the sky or the water depending on the location! Of course, these are all on a case-by-case basis. If you’re ever in doubt, hit me up!!

Pack multiple outfits

As you can see in the different blog posts, every couple packed multiple outfits for their session. This is a great way to mix it up and add variety to your photos! Bringing one dressy outfit and one casual outfit (that you don’t mind getting a little dirty if need be) is usually the sweet spot. And one more thing: don’t forget to pack comfy shoes for walking! I love Big Sur and all the places we can explore, so I don’t want you getting blisters halfway through our session. Deal?
