Hire an outgoing photographer

You can ask any one of my clients – I’m as outgoing as they come! I’m not afraid to get loud and silly with my couples – and that’s what gets us the best photos. When you hire an outgoing photographer, your photos will be full of energy, laughter, and genuine emotion. I become friends with almost all of my couples because I put so much personality into my work.

Leave plenty of room in the timeline

You can’t get beautiful wedding party photos if you don’t have enough time to take them. Leaving plenty of room in your wedding day timeline is crucial to getting the photos that you want. I help all of my couples create the perfect timeline to ensure we get all the shots that they want, plus a few extras! Wedding party photos are usually taken either before or after the ceremony, depending on what time your ceremony is. Either way, always leave more than enough time to account for any hiccups.

Make sure everyone is coordinating

This one is a given, but it’s important to make sure your wedding party is as coordinated as possible. Now, let’s not confuse “coordinating” with “matching”! Your wedding party definitely doesn’t need to be matching to a T to get beautiful photos. Especially with mismatched wedding party outfits becoming more and more popular, most couples end up letting their friends choose their own outfits. If you choose to leave the outfit choice up to your wedding party, I have a few tips for you to keep in mind.

First off, make sure you give them a color palette to stick to. You don’t have to give them specific hex codes to follow, but even categories like “soft pastels” or “warm fall tones” will do you wonders for coordination. My second tip is to give your wedding party certain fabrics to choose from! You could even mix and match fabrics to give your wedding party more of an “organic” feel. But be clear on what fabrics you don’t want them to wear so that you don’t have to have that awkward conversation after the fact. My third and final tip is to create a moodboard that has your colors, inspiration, and anything else useful for your wedding party! This is super helpful for everyone involved because they will have an overall vision of the vibe you’re going for.

Trust your photographer

This goes for all your wedding photos – but I can’t stress enough how much you need to trust your photographer. Trust me, we know what we’re doing! We’ve had tons of experience with posing, prompts, and direction when it comes to wedding party photos. And being a mom, I definitely know how to wrangle a group as excited as your wedding party! Even if something sounds silly, chances are your photographer knows exactly what the outcome will be photo-wise.

Have fun!

Last but not least – have FUN with your wedding party photos! There’s no use stressing out about how your photos are gonna turn out. When you’re stressed, your photos turn out stiff and kinda awkward. On the other hand, when you have fun and let loose, it makes your photos turn out a million times better. So much more emotion shines through when you’re having fun, and that’s exactly what you want for your photos.
